About Hangzhou

Hangzhou,聽formerly romanized聽as聽Hangchow, is the聽capital聽and most populous city of聽Zhejiang Province聽in聽east China.聽It sits at the head of聽Hangzhou Bay, which separates聽Shanghai聽and聽Ningbo. Hangzhou grew to prominence as the southern terminus of the聽Grand Canal聽and has been one of the most renowned and prosperous cities in China for much of the last millennium, due in part to its beautiful natural scenery. The city's聽West Lake聽is its best-known attraction.

Hangzhou is classified as a聽sub-provincial city聽and forms the core of the Hangzhou metropolitan area,the fourth-largest in China.聽During the聽2010 Chinese census, the metropolitan area held 21.102 million people over an area of 34,585聽km2聽(13,353聽sq聽mi).聽Hangzhou聽prefecture聽had a聽registeredpopulation of 9,018,000 in 2015.

In September 2015, Hangzhou was awarded the聽2022 Asian Games. It will be the third Chinese city to play host to the聽Asian Games聽after聽Beijing 1990聽andGuangzhou 2010.聽Hangzhou, an emerging technology hub and home to the e-commerce giant聽Alibaba, also hosted the eleventh聽G-20 summit聽in 2016.
